This incredible primate is the largest of all gorilla subspecies, with males weighing up to 400 pounds and standing at an average height of 5.6 feet. These gorillas are distinguishable by their shiny black coat and robust physical features. They possess longer arms and a stocky torso, which enable them to move swiftly both on the ground and through trees. Eastern Lowland Gorillas are primarily herbivorous, and their diet mainly consists of leaves, fruits, stems, and shoots. These gentle giants live in close-knit social groups led by a dominant male known as the silverback, named after the striking silver-colored fur that develops on their back as they mature. Eastern Lowland Gorillas play a crucial role in maintaining the rainforest ecosystem through seed dispersal as they travel long distances during their foraging activities. Sadly, their population has drastically declined due to habitat destruction, poaching, and conflicts in their native region, making them critically endangered and in urgent need of conservation efforts.
