: The Eastern lowland gorilla, also known as Grauer's gorilla, is one of the four recognized subspecies of gorillas and is native to the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. They are the largest of the four gorilla subspecies and have a muscular physique with broad chests and massive arms. The coat of the Eastern lowland gorilla ranges in color from black to dark gray, and they have a prominent sagittal crest on their heads. Unlike their western counterparts, they have shorter hair and a wider face. These majestic creatures are herbivores and primarily feed on plant matter such as leaves, stems, fruits, and sometimes even ants and termites. They live in stable social groups called troops, which are typically led by a dominant silverback male. Although they are critically endangered due to habitat loss and poaching, efforts are being made to protect and conserve the Eastern lowland gorilla population through various conservation initiatives.
