1. How to get started!

To ensure the successful assembly of a small size stocking, it is imperative to procure an 11" x 14" piece of fabric for both the front and back outside pieces, coupled with another 11" x 14" piece for the front and back lining components . While it is possible to utilize a single Fat Quarter to achieve all four pieces, it is worth noting that they would unfortunately be identical in nature. On the other hand, for those aiming to craft a larger size stocking, the employment of two distinct ¼ yard cuts of fabric (not Fat Quarters) emerges as an ideal solution. Such a selection allows for greater diversity and visual appeal during the creative process.

2. Preparation

To properly construct the stockings, it is essential to cut two stocking shapes of both the outside fabric and the cuff/liner fabric, ensuring that the wrong sides are facing each other. It is vital to pay attention to the orientation of the toe for both fabrics, as this will determine the direction in which the pieces will face. Aligning the wrong sides together facilitates the creation of pieces facing both directions. Finally, pair up one outside fabric with one lining/cuff fabric, ensuring that the toes point in the same direction. With the outside fabric and lining fabric from each set matched right sides together, proceed to sew a ¼″ seam in a meticulous manner.

3. Next part

To ensure precise and professional construction, it is imperative to meticulously match the front and back pieced units of the stocking with the right sides together. This entails aligning not only the outside fabrics but also the lining fabrics, ensuring that their center seams match up perfectly. To secure the pieces in place, the use of pins is highly recommended. Sewing is then commenced along the entire perimeter of the stocking pieces, adhering to the outlined gray line. Care must be taken to leave approximately 2 inches unsewn in the lining fabric to facilitate the subsequent right-side-out turning process. In my practice, I have maintained a ¼-inch seam allowance around the outside, specifically the polka-dot fabric, and a â…œ-inch seam allowance around the green lining fabric, with exception only to the designated open space.

4. Our finishing works.

Before transitioning the project to its finished state, it is advisable to strategically cut notches in the curved sections, particularly in the toe area. This technique serves the purpose of enhancing the overall appearance of the toe when completed. However, one must exercise caution while performing this step to ensure avoiding clipping through the seam. On the side of the liner, it is recommended to clip the fabric close to the seam to assist in removing any excess bulk within the lining. Once these measures have been taken, carefully proceed to turn the project right-side out. In the subsequent stage, meticulous shaping of the external part should be carried out until the curves achieve a pleasing aesthetic, followed by pressing to set the shape. Lastly, tuck the open ends into the stocking and complete the finishing touches by topstitching the opening closed.
